Gerhard Richter interview with Benjamin Buchloh response

Still from -2

responding to On the Rhetoric of Painting

Benjamin Buchloh suggests that by using other ways to paint with can change the perception of the picture

Richter states “I see no sense in exhibiting painting’s old, lost possibilities. I want to say something. I’m interested in new possibilities.”

I agree with Buchloh that the instruments richter has used changes the perception of the picture which i see as a positive continuation of ‘painting’ this opens “new possibilities” which richter states he is interested in

I can see the relationship between the painting and its process of production i can see it wasn’t made using a traditional brush reinforcing the postmodernist idea of using alternative objects to paint with opening up new ways of painting

High vs low culture use of brushes  – more “spectacular”
